Moto X Play
We have seen phablets from the makers like HTC, Sony, Samsung and even Apple and Microsoft, but not from the Motorola. The Google launched the Nexus 6 (made by Motorola) last year but it failed to impress most of us. I am not considering it as a pure-Motorola product because of the 'Nexus'-tag in its name.
The company had announced two phablets along with their hot-selling smartphone Moto G (3rd Gen), i.e. the Moto X Play and the Moto X Style. This is the review of the pocket-friendly- Moto X Play.
Tech Specs:
The Moto X Play is a 2G-3G-LTE ready smartphone which supports two SIM cards at a time. The phablet comes with a 'water-repellent' nano coating and design which is IP52 certified. It packs a 5.5 inch IPS LCD capacitive touch screen which produces 16M colours. The screen comes with Full HD resolution and the pixel density of whooping 401 ppi. It supports multi-touch and comes with Corning Gorilla Glass 3.
For photography, the phablet comes with a 21 MP primary and 5 MP secondary shooter. The primary camera has a Dual-tone LED flash and can record videos in FHD resolution. The connectivity options available in the device are Bluetooth 4.0 (LE) with A2DP, microUSB 2.0, Wi-Fi and NFC. It comes in two storage options- 16GB and 32GB with expandable memory up to 128GB.
The Moto X Play runs on Android 5.1.1 (Lollipop) and is said to run on the latest Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) soon. The phone is loaded with the Qualcomm MSM8939 Snapdragon 615 SoC and an octa-core CPU (two quad-core units clocked at 1.7 GHz and 1.0 GHz respectively). The device also has an Adreno 405 GPU for handling graphics and 2 GB RAM for handling multiple-tasks. The USP of the device is the fast charging ability and a 'monster' 3630 mAh non-removable battery.
Review:
Starting with the looks and design of the device, then I must say that I liked it very much. The body-to-screen ratio is 75.1 per cent, which makes it quiet handy despite being a phablet. The phone is beautifully carved and the built-quality is also impressive. Still, I want to request Motorola (or Lenovo) to try and make some change in the looks of their smartphones. The phablet comes with the 'water-repellent' nano coating and design. The catch here is that the company has avoided using the term 'water-resistant', instead they have used the term 'water-repellent'. This is the clear warning that you can't take your phone to the swimming pool with you.
The screen of the device is another reason to choose this device. With a screen size of 5.5 inch, the phone has a Full HD resolution and pixel density of 401 ppi, which further enhances your experience. Though, the sunlight readability is not really impressive. Another thing that disappointed me was the camera performance. The primary camera produces good colours in day-light conditions, but fail to do so when capturing in low-light. The LED-flash is another reason for such a blunder. The company should have used two LED-flash instead of Dual-tone LED one. Though, the secondary snapper is not that bad and captures your selfies well.
The Moto X Play comes with Android 5.1.1 (Lollipop) out-of-the box and the best part is that it will be upgraded to Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) soon. It has an octa-core processing unit with a combination of 2 GB RAM. This combination seems enough on paper but the reality is different. The phablet handles multi-tasking with ease, but the processing is quite slow. The reason may be the quad-core units in the device. The chipset used is not true octa-core and that changes everything. Still, I am not saying that it is worst but from a company like Motorola, I expected a little better performance. My gaming experience was really good. The games like Asphalt 8 and FIFA worked smoothly with a little heating issues.
Now coming on to the best part of the device, i.e. the battery and fast charging. The phablet is equipped with a big battery size of 3630 mAh and feature like fast charging. The battery-life would be one of the reason to recommend this device. It lasts more than a day with considerable amount of usage. So, you don't need to carry a power-bank with you every time.
Verdict:
The phablet has impressed me with its design, screen, gaming, battery-life and price. But, on the other side, the device has cons too, like the primary camera, performance and sunlight readability. The device is available in storage options, i.e. the 16 GB and 32 GB. Though, the memory is expandable up to 128 GB, so I don't think that you really want the 32 GB variant.
Another thing is, that the phablet is available only on an e-commerce website and that website is not delivering it to many regions in India. This is a big disadvantage to the company as there might be many prospective buyers in those regions, but due to unavailability in their region they cannot buy it. The price, though, is quite competitive that I think that people would love it for that reason.
Keeping all the pros and cons, availability and price in mind, I will rate it 3.5 out of 5.
