Sony Xperia M2 Dual
Sony launched an upgraded version of one of their most
successful device, the Xperia M. I know that this device is pretty old now
(about 3 months) but many people are asking me to review it for them.
Sony launched the Xperia M2 to compete with some of the
best-selling devices available in the market like Samsung Galaxy Grand 2, Nokia
Lumia 1320 and the Moto X. Let us find out whether it’s worthy to buy it or
not?
Tech Specs:
The Xperia M2 Dual is a 2G-3G-WiFi ready device. As the name
suggests it’s a Dual-SIM variant which supports Micro-SIM card. The device
sports a 4.8 inch TFT capacitive touchscreen which has a resolution of 540 x
960 pixels and pixel density of 229 ppi. The display can support 16M colors and
for protection, it uses a Scratch-resistant glass. The internal memory of this
device is 8 GB which can be expanded up to 32 GB using a microSD card.
For photography, it has an 8 MP primary camera with
autofocus and LED flash which is capable in recording videos at 1080p
resolution. The secondary camera is VGA and can record videos or click photos
at 480p. For connectivity, the device sports many options like Bluetooth v4.0,
microUSB v2.0 with USB On-the-go and USB Host and Near Field Communication
(NFC).
The Xperia M2 Dual comes with Android v4.3 (Jelly Bean)
pre-installed but it will be upgraded to v4.4.x (KitKat). The Qualcomm
MSM8226-0 Snapdragon 400 chipset with 1.2 GHz Cortex-A7 CPU is a good
combination. The Adreno 305 is used as the GPU in this device with 1 GB RAM for
handling multi-tasking with ease. A 2300 mAh Li-ion battery provides backup to
this smartphone.
Review:
The first thing that I am going to
make clear is that, there is a difference between the Single-SIM variant and
the Dual-SIM variant. The Single SIM variant can support LTE (4G) (depends on
the model) but the Dual-SIM variant lacks this feature.
The Xperia M2 is really a gorgeous
looking device like all the Sony products. It is more important for Sony to
make it really special as it is the successor to one of the most successful
Sony’s product. They upgraded the display size, resolution, camera, chipset and
CPU. But was that really enough?
The display size is just perfect
for me but the resolution is low. They should have given at least an HD display
(720p). So the conclusion is that, the display is below average. Now talking
about the camera quality, then the primary camera is not up to the mark. It is
not as great as other Xperia devices and I am not going to talk about the
secondary camera.
The phone can handle multi-tasks
very easily and the 1 GB seems to be enough for this device. The processor is
also good and better than the 1 GHz Dual-core. My gaming experience on this
device was also sought of average. The battery backup is quite better than some
other competitors.
Verdict:
According to me, the Xperia M2 Dual is an average device with
some major and minor upgrades from its predecessor. The device is launched as a
mid-ranger and competition to Galaxy Grand 2, Lumia 1320 and the Moto X but I
really feel that it can compete better with Moto G. Sony should decrease the
price of this smartphone to compete with Moto G.
For its good performance and better chipset, I will rate it 3.5 out of
5.
